About the Author

I’m Julie Parnell, the proud founder of Learn Grow Garden – a digital magazine dedicated to helping you plant the seeds of your dream garden and making your gardening dreams come true!

I first learned about gardening from my grandfather in suburban Detroit. He was a proud grower of tomatoes, roses and lilacs. Summers were spent at my uncle’s farm in Northern Michigan. A working farm with cows, chickens and so much more. Those summers were an incredible learning experience. From learning to bale hay to driving a tractor, or picking wild asparagus and rhubarb growing in the field.

My uncle planted a field of pickling cucumbers each summer for us kids to harvest and sell to Vlasic Pickle Company. Each morning we would wake up, eat breakfast and pile into my older cousin’s truck to head to the pickle patch. We’d each take a row and work our way down the row picking the cucumbers that were the right size for the pickle jars. Always on the lookout for pests and problems. We’d fill rough burlap bags to the top with cucumbers. We’d work until early afternoon and then head to the pickle plant, where they would weigh our pickles and pay us for them. Looking back, I think those bags were bigger than we were and the work was hard, but so rewarding!

Gardening’s a Journey

But the education didn’t stop there. Fast forward to today and my Texas garden. Like you, I’ve experienced struggles with soil, pests or plants that just won’t grow.  Every lesson teaches patience, fosters an appreciation for nature, and instills a sense of accomplishment when you see your hard work bear fruit (or flowers!).

And my gardening journey doesn’t stop at my own plant collection. I’m passionate about sharing what I’ve learned with others. Whether you’re struggling with your first houseplant or looking to expand your outdoor garden or landscape, I’m here to help guide you through the process, sharing tips and advice gleaned from my own experiences.

If you have questions, ideas or a topic you would like to see me cover, please drop me a note, I love to hear from readers!

Happy Gardening!

Julie
